Look, I'll level with you, I want to sell a book. Gauche, I know, but
there it is, the long standing dream of someday going into Barnes and
Noble and seeing my work on the 50% off table. But breaking into
publishing? It's difficult. The market's sagging. James Frey's mucking
it up for Oprah. Pundits talk about the death of fiction. It's enough
to give any English major pause.
After much handwringing, I decided, hell, I'll take the characters
from my first novel, You Can't Go to Homecoming Again, and write a
prequel. Y'know, just to introduce the characters, establish the plot
and, um, gain a newfound respect for George Lucas. And while I was at
it, I thought I'd throw in the occasional teaser for my current
project, Tales of the Dark Avenger.
It's gimmicky as hell, but I love it. Maybe you will, too.
